ABSTRACT:
This study examined the costs and returns of vegetable farming in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT),Abuja, Nigeria. The study described the socio-economic characteristics of the farmers, estimated the costsand returns and identified the constraints affecting vegetable production in the study area. A multistagesampling technique was used to select 150 respondents, and data were collected using a validated structuredquestionnaire. The data were analyzed using both descriptive and budgetary analysis to estimate the costsand returns of vegetable production and the constraints facing the production . Findings from budgetaryanalysis showed that fluted pumpkin production had the highest gross margin (₦208,350) and net income(₦167,900), while green amaranthus recorded the lowest gross margin (₦46,800) and net income (₦16,100).Major constraints faced by farmers included scarcity of land, high cost of labour, water scarcity, high cost ofplanting materials, limited access to credit, pests and diseases, poor road networks, and inadequate storagefacilities. The study concludes that vegetable farming in the FCT is profitable but constrained by limitedresources. It therefore recommends improved access to credit, better land policies, investment in water andirrigation infrastructure and farmer training on efficient resource use to enhance productivity andprofitability.
