ABSTRACT:
The trials were conducted in 2023 and 2024 rainy seasons in upland experimental field of National Cereals Research Institute Badeggi to determine the effects of variety and nitrogen levels on weed growth and performance of millet. Data collected were weed identification and classification, weed density and dried matter. Data were also taken on millet tiller count, plant height and panicle length. Others included panicle weight and grain yield. All data collected were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results indicated presence of various weeds which were classified into Broad, Grasses and Sedges weeds. Among broad leafed occurred were Hyptis suaveolens Poit, Agerantum houstroniaanum Miil and Grasses were Pennisetum pedicellatum Trin, Digitaria horizontalis Wiild. Weed density and dried matter were not affected by Millet variety though fertilizer levels showed significant effect on weed density and dried matter. The millet varieties showed no significant effect on tiller production throughout the sampling periods though nitrogen levels have significant at 6 weeks after fertilizer application both 2023 and 2024 cropping seasons. Panicle length was affected by millet varieties and nitrogen levels in both cropping -1seasons. Improve millet variety Sosat c-88 gave higher grain yield while 80 kg ha and 120 kg ha- produced significant higher millet grain yield hence should be practiced.
