ABSTRACT:
There has been increase in grower interest in adopting intercropping in the production of crops in their land.This has been proved to be very productive in tropical and subtropical areas of the world which provide highfield benefit and improved resources use efficiency. A field study was conducted during the 2024 rainy seasonat National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Service Zonal research farm at Baddeggi(NAERLS/ABU) and Mokwa outstation farm is located at 120 km away from Baddeggi. All the experimentaltrial farms are in the Southern Guinea Savanna Zone of Nigeria. The experiment was designed to assess thecompetitiveness of sorghum–groundnut intercropping system as influenced by row orientation andarrangement. The treatments consisted of east–west (E–W) or north–south (N–S) orientation and rowarrangement (1:1, 1:2, 2:1, 2:2, 3:3, 2:4, 4:2). The treatments were laid out in a randomized complete blockdesign with three replications. The sorghum variety used was samsorg-41 (64 DTN) sown simultaneouslywith groundnut variety samnut 22. Result showed that E-W row orientated cropping pattern producedsignificantly higher sorghum–groundnut grain and pod yield (525.10 kg/ha and 430.34 kg/ha) compared toN-S orientation. Row arrangement of 2:1 and 1:2 of sorghum and groundnut produced the highest yields(773.70 kg/ha and 691.36 kg/ha respectively).
